Feral Bee Hive Identification & Activity

Seeing bees around a property does not necessarily mean there is a hive within the building.

Honey bees may travel considerable distances while foraging and can regularly be seen visiting flowering plants and water sources.

Signs that may indicate an established colony include:

• Bees repeatedly entering and leaving the same opening

• Concentrated bee activity around a wall, roof or structure

• Regular activity around eaves or roof openings

• Bees entering wall cavities

• Activity around chimneys or vents

• Bees using openings around sheds or other structures

• Persistent activity from the same location over time

• Honeycomb or other hive material being visible

Swarms and Established Hives

A bee swarm and an established hive are not necessarily the same situation.

A swarm may temporarily cluster on a tree, fence or other surface while searching for a suitable nesting location.

An established colony has occupied a cavity or other location and begun developing its hive.

Determining whether the bees are temporarily present or have established within the property can help determine what action is appropriate.

If you notice concentrated bee activity, avoid disturbing the bees or blocking an opening they are actively using until the situation has been assessed.
